The Picky Job Seeker

There are two kinds of job hunting.

Abel lived in Pittsburgh, he was in a job that wasn't satisfying him, and he wanted to find a new direction. I told him that I only work with people who want to fit the new job to themselves, and that he didn't need me to create truth-stretching resumes and do the internet job-tango. He agreed.

After Abel and I had talked for a while, it was clear that he wanted to pursue a different program - to get clear on what his skills and strengths were, and build an employment plan which looked beyond the next job to the ultimate one. He committed to learning the techniques and realities of this kind of job-search, understanding that what he learned would be of value for the rest of his life, and the inevitable job-searches to come later. He also committed to quit his current job, and did so, to the amazement and dismay of the people who'd employed him.

After a lot of personal evaluation and conversation, we created some stretch-goals for Abel - and we passed up some opportunities which didn't mesh with his new targets.

Here's the payoff. Although Abel began as a somewhat shy and introverted technician, he ultimately blossomed into a man who was willing to take on jobs which had sales and management components. The combination - technical and sales - was very much more powerful than either component by itself. I'm very proud of him.

But let him tell you in his own words.:

Dear Craig, I've been thinking about the impact you've made since we started talking. The changes I see are astounding: - a 180 in personal confidence - a change in my awareness of how things work around me - a better understanding of my weaknesses and strengths

You were invaluable. Perhaps the hardest task for most people, myself especially, is both listening to, and understanding oneself. It is easy to say one thing, it is easy to believe another, but often we have to test ourselves, either by finding challenges or being challenged by others. I see you as a guide through this process.

When we first spoke, I lacked the confidence in myself and what I was capable of, I also lacked the experience and perspective necessary to exact the change I wanted, or the decisiveness to know what change I wanted. Furthermore, it is easy to walk away from a job that one dislikes or a job that is a bad fit, it is much harder to walk away from a job that one considers a dream job. That was how I held my prior job - that is, until I woke up. In the process of our conversations, you guided me through the process of rebuilding my confidence in myself, in my abilities.

I guess this gets into the second thing: you provided a whole series of tools for understanding how to approach myself, and my career. You've introduced me to a few tools, some simple like Parachute or strengthsFinder, and others which appear simple, like concepts of value as it pertains to an organization. Most importantly, however, you challenged me to have confidence in myself and my intuition, and you also challenged me to push beyond what I was comfortable doing.

Abel doesn't mention here that he improved his income by 50%!
